Located on 999 acres of land, against the backdrop of majestic Mount Kinabalu and the spectacular clear blue waters of the South China Sea, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is the seat of high-calibre researchinto the fascinating realm of biodiversity.

“Sabah has one of the richest ecosystems in the world,” says Prof. Datin Dr Mariam Abd. Latip, Dean of the Centre for Postgraduate Studies. “We offer a solid foundation for a wide range of research activities and pride ourselves on our initiatives in marine, terrestrial and ethnic biodiversity, aquaculture, sustainable tourism and poverty alleviation.”

UMS has 10 highly-equipped faculties, 16 research units, three non-academic centres and three Centres of Excellence. As it seeks to become a leader in sustainability, it is the first tertiary institution in Malaysia to develop an EcoCampus, whereby environmental considerations are incorporated into all aspects of the university’s operations.

Since its inception in 1994, UMS has produced some 40,000 graduates. The university currently has nearly 16,000 students, including a growing international cohort, taught by highly-qualified academicians. “An adherence to moral values permeates our educational philosophy and we nurture graduates who demonstrate discipline and a well-rounded outlook on life and are able to contribute to society’s well-being,” Mariam adds.

Applications for scholarships can be made by prospective full-time research students.
