Share with us the story of your postgraduate journey.

My master studies life was wonderful, from an academic and cultural exposure point of view. I joined research projects and developed my research interests, which well prepared me for my PhD later. During the master, I also joined a culture exchange programme organised by our Computer Science Department.

How did you choose this course and institution?

My home university in Italy had a long term collaboration with HKBU. We had a summer exchange and I started to like the people and culture of HKBU.

How did the Programme help with your career development/research?

I am conducting research on Deep Learning Algorithms at the HKUST CAiRE lab. I mainly worked on building end-to-end architectures to model dialogue responses. Currently, my research interests are: learning to learn (a.k.a. meta-learning), end-to-end dialogue systems using Memory Augmented Neural Networks, multi-task learning for word and sentence level embeddings. During MSc Programme, I joined research groups. Through the experience, I developed research skills and published journal articles, which are very helpful for my PhD later.

What is your favourite part about your postgraduate degree?

I joined an exchange programme in Japan. Together with students from different universities and different disciplines, we developed innovative and sustainable solutions for real-life problems, guided by design thinking.

What advice would you give to someone considering a postgraduate degree?

Enjoy the study and friendship in the Programme. If you want to do research in future, take the opportunity to join a research project during MSc studies.
