Share with us the story of your postgraduate journey.
I love science and I enjoy doing laboratory work. Therefore, I would like to devote myself to this industry. In order to increase my competitiveness, I decided to pursue a postgraduate. I graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University and I really enjoyed my time studying at BU. Therefore, the programme offered by HKBU was my first preference. Since the MSc. in Analytical Chemistry offered by the Chemistry Department at HKBU has a long history and is famous in the industry, I decided to enrol on this programme.
How did you choose this course and institution?
I think the best thing about the course is that it provides us with different learning opportunities. Apart from the lectures, we also have laboratory classes and dissertation projects which provide us with hands-on experience in operating modern instrumentation and solving real-life problems. Also, the department invites speakers from outside institutions and industries and organizes seminars regularly which provide us information on the current trends and developments in the field. However, the biggest challenge is the difficulty of the courses because much in-depth knowledge is taught. Fortunately, all the teachers are motivated and passionate and they are willing to answer students’ questions. Therefore, they help me to increase my self-confidence.
Postgraduate studies and your career
For career advancement, the programme has been formally recognized by the Hong Kong Association for Testing, Inspection, and Certification (HKTIC) that graduates can be certified as Certified Testing Professional (CTP) in the field of chemical testing. After finishing the programme, we are able to apply for the personal certification through a shorter path. If we are able to obtain this certificate, we would have a great advantage in the industry.
If you could change anything about your postgraduate journey, what would you do differently?
I think it would be better to pursue a postgraduate immediately after getting the Bachelor degree because the motivation should be the greatest. If we pursue the postgraduate after we have gained a few years of working experience, it would be difficult for us to pick up all the basic knowledge from our undergraduate study.
