Our research projects are themed around the visionary idea of a futuristic Smart Hospital with each project contributing to a key aspect of its development. Smart Hospitals of the future will provide a range of intelligent services for inpatient and outpatient care, enable smart efficient training and education of doctors, nurses and general staff. Smart hospitals will embody the Internet of Things and be fully connected to other smart hospitals, patients and stakeholders in real time.
Smart devices will seamlessly monitor patient health, offering early warning and treatment of disease and ill health. Smart hospitals of the future will optimise work flows and communication to reduce human error rates to zero. Future Smart Hospitals will enable state-of-the-art healthcare to be cost effectively deployed anywhere in the world.
1) Innovating Technology to Benefit Society
- The world we live in today has been transformed by the rapid adoption of technology, it has impacted every aspect of our lives, from our homes, to our schools, industry, key infrastructure and social spaces, enhancing how we live, learn, work and play.
- We are committed to innovating theoretical and applied research to meet the technology challenges of the 21st Century. The school's research themes are aligned to the following areas.
3) Intelligent Systems
- Carries out research into machine learning, image processing, natural language processing with applications in intelligent healthcare, assistive technology and cognitive robotics.

- Driven by the internet of things including mobile applications, device connectivity, information sharing, network security and context aware systems.
4) Data Science
- Data is everywhere and the amount we produce and consume grows day, by day, here we work on making sense of these big datasets, involving data analytics, mining and visualisation across a range of domains.
5) Software Engineering
- Systems are driven by complex frameworks of software, robust methods for software engineering including agile and formal methods, cloud correctness and test automation are essential for reliable and an intelligently maintained infrastructure.
6) Education Technology
- Developing frameworks for better teachings and better learning outcomes through the seamless integration and adoption of technology, including blended learning and interactive tools.
You will undertake your doctoral studies through the Monash doctoral program. At the core of this program is the completion of a substantial research thesis on an agreed topic under the guidance of a supervisory team. Your research training is further enhanced by professional development activities or coursework units designed to support you in your academic and professional development.
Upon completion of your doctoral studies at Monash, you will be able to demonstrate that you have successfully designed and executed a research project that makes an original and substantial contribution to your discipline. In your research journey, you will have also acquired the necessary skills and professional attributes to make an immediate and enduring impact on academia, industry, government, or community.
These course outcomes are aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework level 10 and Monash Graduate Attributes.
Successful completion of this course will signify that the holder has completed a course of graduate research training under proper academic supervision and has submitted a thesis (or equivalent) that the examiners have declared to be a significant contribution to knowledge and which demonstrates the student's capacity to carry out independent original research.
It is expected that graduates will be able to demonstrate the following abilities:
- Carry out independent research
- Critically review the current research in the literature
- Formulate a research problem of high impact and significance
- Apply the appropriate research methodology
- Analyse the research data
- Articulate the research outcome to a variety of audiences.
Conditions of enrolment
You will be required to complete:
- Monash Graduate Research Induction (online)
- Research Integrity (online)
- Any faculty or program induction requirements
As a student of the university, you will be required to abide by all relevant statutes, regulations, policies and procedures. This includes maintaining satisfactory progress via regular milestone reviews in accordance with the Graduate Research Progress Management policy and procedures, ensuring you are undertaking research of an appropriate quality and scale as required by your course. You should refer to the University's current statutes and the University Policy Bank for links to relevant policies, procedures and guidelines.
This course consists of:
- A research and thesis component or a practice based research project and exegesis component
- A coursework study program
You must, in consultation with and under the direct supervision of a member/s of the academic staff:
1. Carry out a program of research on an agreed topic approved by the school or department of enrolment in your chosen discipline for a specified period, including attending and/or presenting at seminars and other related activities as indicated by the relevant school/department
2. Complete one of the following:
a. Submit for assessment a thesis of not more than 80,000 words on the program of research which meets the requirements of the examiners. Submission of a thesis including published works may be permitted.
b. Develop a practice-based research project on an agreed topic approved by the school or department of enrolment in your chosen discipline, resulting in a body of work examined by demonstration or exhibition. The examinable material includes a written exegesis, the minimum of which is to be 35,000 words, excluding appendices, bibliography etc. The exegesis is to contextualise the practice-based work. The works in the demonstration or exhibition should engage one or more of the senses, and must not only be new but must also result in a doctoral level contribution, which has substantial disciplinary significance. Unless site-specific, the faculty requires doctoral examination demonstrations or exhibitions to be conducted on campus.
3. Satisfactorily complete the following program of coursework study:
- Information technology PhD program
This program suits students who wish to pursue an academic career in IT. Depending on the selected research, the award will advance students' careers in:
- Artificial Intelligence
- Software engineering
- Systems analysis
- Technology consultancy
You can apply for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) throughout the year, subject to availability of supervision.
To enter Monash University, students must satisfy particular academic, English language and age requirements.
To apply for the PhD program in the School of Information Technology, you must have completed:
- A bachelor’s degree, requiring at least four years of full-time study and which normally includes a research component in the fourth year, leading to an honours degree class 1 (first-class honours) or class 2A (upper second-class honours) level
- A course leading to a master’s preliminary qualification at a level rated by the Monash University Institute of Graduate Research as equivalent to an honours class 1 or 2A degree
- A research master’s degree
- A master’s degree that entailed work, normally including a significant research component, at least equivalent to an honours degree
English language requirements
Sound English language skills are required for all academic programs at Monash. You can demonstrate your English language proficiency through one of the following:
- Studying English at Year 12 or equivalent
- Studying at an institution where English is the language of instruction
- English Proficiency Tests
- Monash English Bridging
If you have achieved more than one of the English language requirements over a period of time, only the most recent demonstration of English proficiency will be considered.
You must meet specific English language requirements when applying for our master’s and doctoral research degrees.
Submission of evidence
You must submit full documentary evidence in support of English proficiency with your application for candidature. If your first language is not English, or where degree qualifications were not undertaken in the English language, Monash reserves the right to seek further documentary evidence of English proficiency.
