Course outline

This coursework and media degree addresses the needs of people working, or aspiring to work, in the communications and media industry. It looks at the history, development and reception of traditional and new media around the world and the changes in content delivery, policy and technology that have taken place in recent years.

The program’s curriculum is both theoretically and practically grounded.

Students complete either four or five units by coursework and also undertake a minor or major research project.

Areas of study

Students undertaking the program will learn contemporary skills necessary for the participation in and management of sophisticated communicative processes in regional, urban, national and international contexts. These include critical thinking, cultural sensitivity, advanced reading and communication skills (both written and verbal), and high-level analytical skills. More widely, the degree aims to develop skills in communications and media research. This methodological training will enable students to participate in relevant research-based study and equip them with an edge for today’s competitive workplaces.

Students may exit this course early and apply to graduate with one of the following awards, provided they have satisfied the requirements indicated for that award during their enrolment in this master's course:

  • Graduate Certificate in Arts after successful completion of 24 credit points of study with a minimum of 18 credit points at level 4 or above
  • Graduate Diploma in Arts after successful completion 48 credit points of study with a minimum of 36 credit points at level 4 or above

Knowledge and skills in communication are increasingly valued across a wide range of industries, particularly at the management level.

This course focuses on challenges posed by the emergence of digital media, globalisation and increasing levels of cross-cultural exchange. The last decade has been one of unprecedented change in communications and media content, forms, technology and policy with wide-ranging implications for business, politics, public administration and everyday life. You will examine these developments from a historical, political and theoretical perspective and increase your understanding of communications and media systems both locally and globally.

The course is particularly designed to focus on themes relevant to those employed or seeking employment in communications and media industries, for instance, electronic journalism, policy formulation, public relations, and tourism marketing, and to those wishing to develop expertise in communications and media studies for purposes of teaching or further study.

Outcomes

These course outcomes are aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework level 9 and Monash Graduate Attributes.

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge of diverse aspects of communications and media including policy, content and technology change over time
  • Articulate and apply an understanding of communications and media and their intersections with politics, public administration, business and the everyday
  • Demonstrate a critical appreciation of the secondary literature in the field of study and with the key texts and cultural products pertaining to communication and media
  • Apply advanced reading, communication and analytical skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of research methodology and ethics, and an ability to undertake a small, independent research project.

Intake periods

There is one intake period in February each year for the Master of Communications and Media Studies at Monash University Malaysia.

Programme fees

In 2018, full tuition fees for this course are:

  • RM47,700 for Malaysian students (full course)
  • RM52,470 for international students (full course)

Entry requirements

To apply for the Master of Communications and Media Studies, you must have completed at least one of the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree with at least a credit average in the final year
  • A bachelor’s pass degree with demonstrable professional experience (minimum of two years) at management level in a relevant area (these applicants will need to supply a CV, a 1000-word statement and the names of two professional referees)
  • A graduate diploma with credit (or above) average. Those with an honours degree or a graduate diploma in a relevant area can apply for an advanced entry point

English language requirement

Sound English language skills are required for all academic programs at Monash. You can demonstrate your English language proficiency through one of the following:

  • Studying English at Year 12 or equivalent
  • Studying at an institution where English is the language of instruction
  • English Proficiency Tests
  • Monash English Bridging.

If you have achieved more than one of the English language requirements over a period of time, only the most recent demonstration of English proficiency will be considered.

You must meet specific English language requirements when applying for our master’s and doctoral research degrees.

Submission of evidence

You must submit full documentary evidence in support of English proficiency with your application for candidature. If your first language is not English, or where degree qualifications were not undertaken in the English language, Monash reserves the right to seek further documentary evidence of English proficiency.
